Gladiator

How is representation constructed in the opening sequence?
Refer to

  • binary opposites,
  • stereotypes,
  • costume,
  • sound,
  • editing,
  • speech,
  • gesture and posture
The gladiator opening sequence is hand running through a beautiful Field then to a Romans battle field which immediately tells us its an action and adventure genre. Its clear theres an important battle about to happen and they all seem very tense though its serious. Its clear they have alot of respect for the main character who is male and looks like a roman epiour, somone which high euthority. They bow down when he walks past which represents that he is in charge of all these troops.

He is defonatly created as the sterotypical male as he has a masclin face with facial hair, he is large with muscle and has dark hair which goes with the stero type for a male and espically in a action and adventure genre. The costume that he is wearing is big heavy amour which suggests he is about to right and he is some kind of army, he has some fur over the top which also tells us he has luxurys and he is higher authortiy than the others so a leader. He has the typical roman skirt of amour and the red underneath which hints its set in the roman times and he is a roman. The sounds  that you can that are diatectic are the men shouting, the horses hoof, the swords and the horse neying. The music in the background is percusion and wind intrustments suttlerly in the background but gets louder as the battles about to begin. The editing used is cross cut its used to show the whole picture of where they are. Theres very little speech as its a tense moment and they are focusing for battle. But the main character talks to the men on horses and he comes across as the hero he talks in heroic manner and the contex of what he's talking about. He has little gesture and posture as he is clearly hind his emtions and comming across as the tough warrior and hero.

Tom Cruise in Austin Powers -Goldmember, the spoof /parody AA film

The opening starts out with tom curse falling out of the sky. This is a very obvious grene as action and adventure.   it begins as Tom Cruise is climbing up cliff or mountain. Its set in a desert sort of place and in exotic place. He is wall climbing which demonstrates the acttion and adventure as it creates a sense of danger which is what action and adventure grenres about. He begins to fall however we can tell that he has experience in rock climbing as he manages to stay on the rocks. This also shows the strength of him showing that he is the typical male spy / hero . Later on a helicopter comes and drops some sort of spy gear and Tom is given a mission from a voice of what seems to be the person in charge of him. This hints about what the grenre is. It is clear its a spy action and adventure film. What happens in this is he is given a mission to find a lady and this is very typical of an action and adventure film, the dansil in distress which typical stero type for a femal.. The audience feels quite safe with him as he is quite in control however they may feel slightly scaryed by him as he is a strong man who is doing extreme things that would never be done by any normal person. He seems like a hero characttor however it is difficult to see that clearly. He seems to be the hero as he is one the one that has been given the mission. He gives a big smile at the end which showa hes in control and he will do it. The audience has creat confidence in him that he will susceed.

QI analysing

I watched the Qi episode in series J episode 6. joints episode. QI (Quite Interesting) is a British comedy panel game television quiz show created and co-produced by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry, and featuring permanent panellist Alan Davies. Steven fry is the presenter of the show and his policy is the person with the stupidist answer wins as the questions he asks are very challenging to answer and sometimes confusing. The panel consists of four participants: three rotating and one regular, Alan Davies, who has the seat to Stephen Fry's immediate right. Davies has appeared in every episode. The audience see davies as the dumb one that everyone picks on and laughs at. Hes the one that never wins and almost always doesn't give the answer they were looking for. The bits that makes people laugh is mainly for the most stupid answer will give the audience a bit laugh. The guest speakers come across almost quite imature in answer there questions and almost stupid which is why the show is so sucessful as it makes people feel amost better about them selfs. Questions are  misleading or very difficult. Providing an "obvious but wrong" answer results in a sequence of flashing lights, and a theatrical cry of despair from Stephen Fry, which very much amuses the audience. Because of the show's expectation that hardly anyone would be able to give a correct answer without significant prompting, it instead encourages sheer interestingness, which is how points are mainly scored. Negative scores are common, and occasionally even the victor's score may be negative.
